Job Opportunities for 2008-09 Season
MUSIC DIRECTOR/CONDUCTOR

The Providence Gay Men’s Chorus (PGMC) is currently seeking a new Music
Director/Conductor for its 2008-09 season.  The PGMC, founded in 1995, is a men’s
4-part chorus currently comprised of 25 singers.  The chorus’ mission is “Harmonizing
Diversity in Song” and the ideal candidate for this position will help the PGMC to
champion this goal.  (Additional information about the PGMC can be found online at

The chorus currently performs twice yearly, in the fall and spring, as well as at a
number of fundraisers and community outreach events throughout the year.  The ideal
candidate for this part-time position will have previous experience directing/conducting
choral groups and must have a four-year college degree in a related music field.  (The
ability to arrange music is desired but not a requirement.)

Complete Job Description:

The Music Director provides the artistic vision of the Providence Gay Men’s Chorus
and is responsible for the leadership and direction of every performance aspect of the
chorus. The Music Director is under contract and accountable to the PGMC Board of
Directors.

Artistic Management
  • Provides overall artistic leadership and direction for the chorus
  • Conducts auditions for chorus members as needed
  • Recruits the community’s best choral talent
  • Develops and maintains relationships with existing choral organizations in the
    community (i.e., GALA member choruses)
  • Coordinates and serves as leader in preparation for multiple choral concerts
  • Supervises all artistic aspects in the choice of repertoire and selection of venues
  • Selects all artistic personnel (soloists)
  • Supervises all rehearsals and concerts
  • Supervises all recording activities (where applicable)
  • Writes program notes for each concert
  • Develops a positive working relationship with the accompanist

Administration
  • Coordinates music filing system with the librarian
  • Responsible for securing music for concerts
  • Develops rehearsal schedule, prints copies and distributes to members

Board Relations
  • Presents monthly reports to the Board of Directors regarding the status of the
    artistic programs and projects
  • Attends executive committee meetings
  • Participates in fundraising activities

Public Relations
  • Serves as official spokesperson for the organization
  • Participates in community activities that further the name recognition of the
    chorus
  • Represents the chorus in all media appearances
  • Participates in musical and professional organizations locally and nationally
  • Collaborates with the Board of Directors in developing marketing campaigns
    and publicity for the chorus

Financial Management
  • Develops an annual comprehensive artistic plan in collaboration with the Board
    of Directors that provides the basis for the annual budget
  • Participates with the Board of Directors in fee negotiation for artists and
    orchestra
  • Follows the approved annual budget
  • Collaborates with the Board of Directors in the preparation of grant applications
